I've interviewed hundreds of people.

Here's something I hear 80% of the time:“I’m a great communicator.”

"Wow. Groundbreaking."

-said no one in the history of job interviews,

Then, even better, I follow up with "Can you tell me more?" and most of the time, the interviewee cannot clearly communicate their claim. Do you see the irony?

Now, truly, there are people who shine in their ability to communicate. You recognize this most after listening to a bad set of directions, listening to a story filled with way too much extra context, or working for someone who isn't "bad" at communicating, they just don't do it at all.

Here are 6 more specific ways to answer the questions, stand out, and nail this answer!

  1. "I can simplify complex ideas and specific industry jargon for unfamiliar audiences."

  2. "I can recognize when to contribute to the conversation or sit back and listen."

  3. "I am unafraid of confrontation and many of these conversations result in not only solving the issue at hand, but also a stronger relationship between the other party and myself"

  4. "I am great at sharing clear and concise messaging that get's results"

    1. Example: “I focus on keeping emails direct and well-structured. A manager once mentioned that they appreciated how my emails always had clear subject lines and bullet points, making it easy for them to quickly grasp key information.” (courtesy of ChatGPT)

  5. "I am prompt in sharing or relaying messages to my team. I don't often procrastinate, and I am great at remembered to follow-up if I don't receive a response or to tailor my communication media based on the person"

  6. "I am a strong storyteller. When I share stories, people are often engaged and show emotion"

Then remember to ALWAYS have 1-2 examples that exemplify your use of the strength to prove your validity!

Happy interviewing!
